Protein is having a moment ✨
And I’m here for it. For the last I don’t know how many years it seems like in pop culture protein – specifically animal-based proteins have been getting the short end of the stick. And now? They’re getting their time to shine ✨
Like, I remember when I was growing up it always seemed like we shouldn’t eat as much protein, and to remain ‘small’ protein was basically a no-go. But, I’ve always gone against the status quo and eaten a lot of protein – especially animal-based protein, and I’m happy it’s getting the recognition it deserves.
Lately, it seems like pop culture is tipping it’s hat, and tipping the scale, in favor of beef (my fav), chicken and pork and the health benefits that animal-based proteins provide to literally serve as the building blocks of our bodies.
So why is animal-based protein the best? All proteins are made up of amino acids (the building blocks of proteins), some of which are essential (aka our bodies cannot make them, they have to come from our diet) and nonessential. Here are the actual definitions:
ESSENTIAL: essential amino acids cannot be made by the body. As a result, they must come from food. There are 9 essential amino acids and they are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. TBH I used to actually have these memorized (THANKS BIOCHEM!), but after I finished college they went out of my brain, lol.
NONESSENTIAL: nonessential means our bodies can produce these amino acids and they don’t need to come from our food. These amino acids are alanine, arginine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, proline, serine and tyrosine.
Animal-based proteins (beef, chicken, pork) are considered COMPLETE proteins because they contain the 9 essential amino acids our body can’t make themselves, while most plant-based proteins can’t. And here’s the thing – our bodies literally NEED protein, especially those essential amino acids, to SURVIVE!
